Walthamstow's Water Supply

If you live in the East End and parts of North London have you ever wondered where your drinking water comes from? You may not be aware, but it actually originates in the 10 large reservoirs that make up the Walthamstow Wetlands, which sit between Coppermill Lane and Forest Road in North East London.

If you pay a visit to the area you could be forgiven for thinking that it was a high-security compound with its fences and security cameras, but members of the public can enter by paying a token fee at the main gate to the complex which you'll find opposite the Ferry Boat Inn on Forest Road. I've marked a map here to show you where you can find it. There are now plans to make it more visitor-friendly with a £10 million development that will see improved habitats for wildlife and a visitor centre. If you live in the area you can contribute to the discussion about the future of the site at the London Wildlife Trust's website here.
