Strap On Your Pointy Ears – The 12th Sci-Fi London Festival Lands In Stratford

sci-fi london stratford 2013

For the twelfth outing of London’s most popular science fiction festival, Sci-fi London has teamed up with the BFI and will be taking over Stratford’s Picturehouse cinema for a week from next Tuesday, 30 April.

This year’s festival will feature screenings of sci-fi classics, showcase new movies and there will also be a programme of short films that are being presented to an audience for the first time. Some of the highlights of Sci-Fi London 2013 include:

  • Dead Meat Walking – Saturday 4 May. A zombie walk documentary which will include interviews with actor, make-up artist and director Tom Savini (Grindhouse, Django Unchained and many others) and screenwriter John Russo, looking at the growing cult status of zombies in movies and on TV.
  • Three all-nighters, including one focused on anime on Saturday 4 May which will feature 009 RE: Cyborg (IN 3D), Berserk Golden Age Arc 1, War of the Worlds@ Goliath (3D), Street Fighter II and Loups-Garous.
  • Two panels of experts will feature on Sunday 5 May as part of Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary celebrations – guests include Paul Cornell and Terrence Dicks, and the event will finish with the Peter Cushing movie Doctor Who & The Daleks (which is pretty atrocious, but you can’t really call yourself a Whovian if you haven’t seen it).
  • Superdogs, a dog show taking place at noon on Sunday 5 May where the best-dressed superhero pooches will be pacing the catwalk (dogwalk?) – the winner will get a professional photo shoot and a doggy bag…

Kicking the whole thing off is a science-fiction themed costume parade assembling outside the cinema on Stratford’s Theatre Square from 2:30pm this Sunday, 28 April which will then thread its way through the area – if you’ve got a costume in your wardrobe that desparately needs an airing then this is the spot for you, and there’s also an after-party for participants. Even if you don’t know your Mal Reynolds from your Elim Garak from your Valen, it’s probably worth popping along anyway if you’re in the area, if only to witness the colour and the spectacle of it all. The Londoneer will be there capturing some of the amazing costumes, so keep an eye on the site for some interesting photographs later on Sunday evening…
