Cloud: Meteoros – St Pancras International’s Latest Work Of Art

London’s refurbished St Pancras International station has a brand new piece of art – look up as you enter the concourse and you’ll see the clouds drifting amongst the girders over the Eurostar platforms. These two huge objects are Cloud: Meteoros by the English/Argentinian husband and wife team, Lucy and Jorge Orta. Talking about the sculpture, Lucy Orta said:

Floating amid the glass-vaulted architecture of the historic Barlow Shed, Cloud | Metéoros resembles vast cumuli populated with travellers, a ‘magic carpet’ taking passengers on an imaginary journey in the skies. It also carries a more political message. The cloud calls into question how mankind will share the vital resource of water on earth.

Cloud:Meteoros is the first in a series of nine commissions by HS1 Ltd (the company that operates the high-speed rail line between central London and the Channel Tunnel entrance in Kent) entitled Terrace Wires, which will see new pieces of public art suspended over the concourses throughout the next few years. It’s not the first time that the station has had unusual objects appear over the platforms however – last year, huge Olympic Rings greeted visitors to London…

Cloud:Meteoros will remain in place at St Pancras until October 2013 so there’s no need to rush over there to see it – just keep your eyes open the next time that you’re heading to Europe or going up to the East Midlands and Yorkshire…
