Up to and including this Saturday, 21st April, the Goats Theatre Company present several performances of Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’ at the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone.
‘A Doll’s House’ originally courted controversy with its challenges to the 19th century norms surrounding the roles of men and women in marriage, but its lessons are still pertinent today – one wonders where Ibsen drew his inspiration from given that the play, written in 1879, predated the women’s rights movement by some 80 or so years… The Goats Theatre Company, which is putting on these performances , is a London-based repertory company providing shows for schools, universities and the community and is offering tickets for this week’s performances at only £10, which you can purchase here online. College and university groups of 20 or more can also get reduced price tickets of £5 for Thursday night (19 April) and the Saturday matinee, plus two free tickets for teachers/lecturers. These group bookings must be made by phone to 020 72582925, quoting code ‘Pocketwatch’.
Regarding the Cockpit Theatre itself, it was established right back in the 1970s and you can find information on all of the upcoming performances and events here. For theatre-goers on a budget the Cockpit hosts a monthly ‘Theatre In The Pound (TIT£)’ night where the price of a ticket is, you guessed it, a pound. Performers taking part in these events pay a pound a minute for 15 minute performance slots so, as you can imagine, one a month the Cockpit hosts a very eclectic night of entertainment. Just to note that according to the small print jugglers are not welcome…
