Flying The ‘Emirates Air-Line’ Across The Thames

As you may know, the Emirate’s Air-Line, the new cable car across the Thames that joins the Greenwich Peninsula south of the river with the Royal Docks in the north, opened last week.

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to board it for the first time, travelling the kilometre between the terminals in just under five minutes, its peak journey time. At less busy times of day the cable car slows to half speed, with the journey taking a more leisurely ten minutes. At a maximum height of 90 metres, a journey on the Emirates Air-Line gives a commanding view over the Thames, providing a much clearer picture of the twists and turns in this part of the river than you get from ground level. Although I found myself experiencing an initial twinge of vertigo when the cable car started into the air from the platform, I soon forgot about it and settled down to enjoy the sights…

If you  have an Oystercard (with sufficient pre-pay value loaded on it to cover the journey) the cost for a one-way trip on the Emirates Air-Line is £3.20 for adults and £1.60 for children. You can take a look at some of my other photographs of the journey here.
