Something WickED This Way Comes – Hackney WickED Returns For 2013

From the 16 to 18 August Hackney WickED returns for three days of art events, open studios, music and more in the unusual environs of the Wick, just across the canal from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Welcome to the Wick...

Now in it’s sixth year, there’s so much to this arts festival it’s difficult to know where to start, but here are three highlights which are not to be missed in my opinion:

Hackney WickED Open Studios

Most of the artists’ studios across Hackney Wick and Fish Island will be throwing open their doors for the entire three days of Hackney WickED. It will give you an opportunity to see them at work, and take a look around the collection of industrial buildings and old warehouses that accommodate the Wick’s diverse artistic community. Participating studios this year include Bridget Riley Studios, Britannia Works, Cell Studios, Eastway Laundry Studios, Lion Works, 55-57 Wallis Road Studios, Mother Studios, Oslo House, Percy Dalton’s, The Peanut Factory, 5B Prince Edward Road, Vittoria Wharf Studios, The White Building & White Post Lane Studios (so far – there will probably me more!).

Opening times are 6 to 9pm on Friday 16 August and 12 to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Hackney WickED Acoustic Music

Taking over the Queen’s Yard between the Yard Theatre and the Crate Brewery, there will be two entire days of live music to enjoy in this odd, out of the way part of the Wick. There are no details on the website as to who will be appearing as yet but it’s bound to feature some amazing performances over Saturday and Sunday, starting at 1pm and going on until late.

Street Art Photography Workshop & Tour

One part of the festival that I’m hoping to participate in, people wanting to take in the masses of local street art while learning some photography techniques are invited to assemble outside the Yard Theatre at 1pm on Sunday 18 August. There will be a one hour workshop followed by a gentle stroll around the area, organised and run by the talented founder of Shoreditch Street Art Tours. If you want to be sure of a place, drop an email to Jack at [email protected] .
