Glasgow Girls – A New Musical @ The Theatre Royal Stratford East From 8 February

glasgow girls theatre royal stratford eastConceived and directed by Cora Bissett (responsible for the Olivier award-winning Roadkill) and written by David Grieg, musical Glasgow Girls comes to the Theatre Royal Stratford East for a month-long run from 8 February.

Back in 2005, seven girls from the Drumchapel High School in Glasgow received an award at the Scottish Politician of the Year Awards for their work to prevent the deportation of a fellow student, Agnesa Murselaj, a Kosovan who was the child of asylum seekers. Glasgow Girls is based on their experiences, and features a whole host of song and dance numbers including electronic grime by Patricia Panther, folk/rock from Cora Bissett and reggae/dub from rapper Sumati Bhardwaj (Soom T).

Regarding this new production of the musical Dawn Reid, Theatre Royal Stratford East’s Deputy Artistic Director, said :

“Glasgow Girls is a hugely important show for us. It’s a humorous, powerful and touching new musical based on a true story that has human endeavour at its heart. We’re pleased to be working with the National Theatre of Scotland for the first time in addition to welcoming back Cora Bissett after last year’s success with Roadkill.”

Glasgow Girls runs from 8 February until 2 March 2013, with tickets priced from £5 to £24. You can find further details and book tickets on the Theatre Royal Stratford East website here. Yet to be announced, several performances will feature post-show discussions – keep an eye on the theatre’s Twitter feed for updates on these special nights.
