The Guards War Memorial @ Waterloo Place

Although it’s been overshadowed by the battles of the First and Second World Wars, the Crimean War which took place between 1853 and 1856 was very much a part of the national consciousness during that period of our history, primarily because it was the first international conflict to involve regular reports from correspondents on the battlefields, which quite often were accompanied by examples of early photography.

The involvement of the British Army’s Guards Regiments, who lost over 2000 soldiers during the war, is commemorated by the Guards War Memorial which you’ll find at the intersection of Pall Mall and Regent Street. This large edifice features the statues of three resolute-looking Guardsmen (cast from the metal of artillery pieces captured after the siege of Sebastopol) with the figure of Victory holding wreathes hovering over them. It’s a rather grand monument, I’m sure you’ll agree.
