The ‘Colour of London’ Photo Competition

Today I’m announcing the ‘Colour of London’ Photo Competition.

The prize for the winner consists of two books about London which will be useful to you whether you’re a local, planning a trip to the city or even an Anglophile who is just interested in learning a bit more about the capital.

  • The London Nobody Knows” by Geoffrey Fletcher. Originally published in 1962 this volume has recently been republished, and features descriptions of unusual London locations often accompanied by charming pencil sketches drawn by the author. Sadly many of the places mentioned in the book have since disappeared, either through neglect or due to the property developer’s wrecking ball. It’s an indispensable book for anyone interested in London’s overlooked past – there’s even an extensive section on Victorian public lavatories for example!
  • Quiet London‘ by Siobhan Wall. This 144-page book offers great ideas for ‘getting away from it all’ without actually leaving the city. There are sections on peaceful public gardens you can discover, delightful small museums dedicated to the oddest subjects, old independent bookshops and more – I often use it as inspiration for my gentler travels around London.

To enter, all you have to do is post a reply in the comments section below and include, or link to, one of your own photographs which features an object or objects that are exactly the same shade of red as a London bus! The quality of the photography isn’t important, so images from your smartphone’s camera are perfectly fine – I will be judging the photographs solely on the composition of the shot and, of course, on the colour reproduction.

The competition is open to every reader of the Londoneer, wherever you are around the world, and runs for two weeks from today, closing on Tuesday 20 March. I’ll contact the winner directly to arrange delivery of the prize, and publish another post on the blog showcasing the winning entry and my favourite shots from the runners up shortly after the competition closes.

Feel free to let your imagination run wild – you won’t necessarily win by posting a picture of an actual London bus (although if you’ve snapped one 3,000 miles from London I will be very impressed)! Can I please ask you to spread the word about the competition on Twitter and on Facebook too, as it would be great to have a good selection of photographs to choose from. Good luck!

[box] I’ve decided to extend the competition to the end of March to allow more entries – please, please retweet this post and ‘like’ it on Facebook so that as many people as possible get the opportunity to enter – these are really great books and a very useful resource.[/box]
