Four Ways To Get Over A Break-Up In London

This guest post comes to you courtesy of Jo Harris-Cooksley.

Break-ups are never a good thing, and most people will have experienced that horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach, the sleepless nights and foodless days that follow. But if you are heartbroken, then London is an extremely good place to be. Its size alone means you’re less likely to bump into your ex for an awkward chat, but above all, getting over a break-up is all about keeping busy – and that’s what London does best, so here are some ways to indulge your newly single status in the city:

Concentrate on Cooking

After your ex, the next thing to make an exit after a break-up is usually your appetite. So if you can’t eat, why not use the time to hone your cookery skills ready for when your appetite returns (or for the next person you want to impress). There are plenty of cookery classes and schools dotted around London where Michelin trained chefs will show you how to cook anything from sophisticated dinners to Sushi snacks. L’atelier des Chefs is one, or try an Italian master class at La Cucina Caldesi – your stomach will be rumbling again in no time. You could also take a leaf out of the Great British Chefs book and do some learning online.

Shop, Shop, Shop

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that retail therapy is a certified cure when it comes to matters of the heart. With around 300 shops to choose from, Oxford Street is the obvious place to start. For best results go armed with a good friend or better yet, get a personal shopper to advise on a complete image re-vamp. After that, try out London’s quieter corners. Islington’s Camden Passage is a must-visit for antiques and small independent shops, or head to Marylebone High Street for top quality beauty products, home wares, jewellery and gift ideas. Don’t leave the latter without browsing the shelves of Daunt Books, one of the most beautiful book shops in London.

An Evening of Cocktails

When it comes to nights out, think carefully. You’ll need a feel-good place which is high on atmosphere but low on the sleaze-factor, so an upmarket cocktail bar or restaurant is a good choice. Soho spots such as the London Cocktail Club are always a winner for the barman banter alone, but they can get crowded. For a more high-end experience, grab some mates and head out on a cocktail tour. That way, a table, drink, recipe card and advice from a good mixologist awaits in up-market haunts such as Sartoria on Saville Row and Cuban inspired Floridita.

Clear Your Head on the Heath

Finally, get some fresh air. Going for a walk in London’s green spaces, like Hampstead Heath, is a good way to clear your mind without leaving the confines of the city. In the summer months there are regular concerts in front of Kenwood House. With 790 acres at your disposal, there’s bound to be a patch of grass available for a big group picnic with friends, whether you want to listen to music, relax in the sunshine – or both. Or, if you really want to feel refreshed, Hampstead Heath is also the home of north London’s most famous outdoor swimming ponds as well as the Parliament Hill Lido. It might not cure a broken heart, but it will do wonders for a hangover.
