In a title that could have been written specifically for Jonathan Ross, Walk England (the social enterprise who encourage people to stay healthy by leaving their cars on the drive and taking shanks’ pony instead)  are putting on a series of free guided walks around London next weekend, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th January, the ‘Winter Wander’s Weekend‘.

Ironically one of the walks, ‘London’s Hidden Alleyways And Courtyards’ is very likely to cover much of the same ground as last week’s talk at the London Transport Museum! Another, ‘Somewhere Else London’, looks like its going to focus on the backstreets of the West End, while I would guess that ‘Paved With Gold’ is going to take in the Royal Palaces and the area around the Mall, where some of London’s poshest residences can be found.

My favourite however, and the one I might be taking myself if time allows, is ‘The Glorious London Loop’, a ten mile hike which will take you through many areas of London that most people never see, and which will no doubt involve quite a few unexpected sights. I’ve walked the eastern end of the ‘loop’ on several occasions, where it follows the canal for much of the time. It’s great fun, but if you do decide to do this particular walk make sure you wear your sturdiest boots!

If you can’t manage one of Walk London’s guided walks this weekend don’t despair – the Walk London site contains lots of information on many walks that you can take by yourself whenever the mood takes you.
