As one of her gifts to the nation in her Diamond Jubilee year, the Queen will be bestowing ‘Royal’ status on Greenwich, from 3 February 2012 to be precise. The newly styled ‘Royal Borough of Greenwich’ will also be able to use a specially designed crest to reflect it’s new status, which is replete with symbols that signify its long naval traditions and associations with royalty, as well as its importance as a centre of scientific discovery.
Looking at the new crest I have to say that it looks very busy to me – clearly the result of ‘design by committee’, but I really like the inspired device that they have used to divide the shield – a representation of the River Thames, which does take these dramatic curves at this point on its course.
If you have an interest in local developments in and around the borough I recommend adding the mysterious Greenwich Phantom and the 853 Blog (named for Greenwich’s old telephone dialling code) to your reading list…
