The National Police Memorial

Partly inspired my visit to Yvonne Fletcher’s plaque, and partly by the entry on London Remembers, I went to take a look at the National Police Memorial which sits nestled up against the Admiralty Citadel at the top of the Mall in central London.

Unveiled in April 2005, the National Police Memorial and its adjacent glass tower were designed by Sir Norman Foster. Its construction followed several years of lobbying by Michael Winner, who for many years has championed a campaign to see police officers who have fallen in the line of duty properly commemorated. The National Police Memorial consists of a rectangular building faced in marble (and which conceals a vent to the London Underground below) which has a glass panel at one end, behind which is a book of remembrance that lists the names of police officers from across the UK and the circumstances in which they were tragically killed. There is also a tower of horizontally stacked glass plates over a small reflecting pool.

If you’re heading up the Mall from Buckingham Palace towards Trafalgar Square perhaps you can have a look at the memorial and spare a thought for those brave police officers…
