Rev78 @ The Proud Galleries - Gig Review

Tonight I was over at the rather unique Proud Camden venue for a performance by Rev78,  the Camden-based four piece indie rock band who have recently launched their new album, 'Boy In The Blitz'.

Before I tell you a little more about the band I should probably make mention of the venue - Proud Camden occupies the former horse hospital in the middle of the Stables Market off Chalk Farm in Camden Town. In addition to the gallery/performance space where we saw the band perform tonight, there's also a popular restaurant and, at the other end of the building, a series of horse stalls which have now been kitted out with funky seating (and a few pole-dancing stages would you believe) which can be booked out individually for a fun night out with friends.

How to describe Rev78 then? Well their flamboyant lead singer Teddy (who was sporting a sparkly black low-cut blouse tonight!) has a remarkable stage presence, and his vocal stylings have been favourably compared to Ian McCulloch (of Echo & The Bunnymen) - personally I'd argue that he has an even larger emotional range than Curtis because some of his performances are really visceral. There's something wonderfully retro about Rev78's sound too - big rocky anthems that ache with heartache and passion which are sadly missing from the charts for the most part these days. It's rare to find a band who can carry material this ambitious off so competently, and I'm also  happy to report that they can do the business live on stage too!

Rev78 are definitely worthy of an extended listen - in fact they've become another regular staple of my music queue. 'Killing Me', 'Lullaby' and 'Every Bone' are my particular favourites from 'Boy In The Blitz' at the moment...

Apologies - a big brain freeze there!

Ian Curtis and Ian McCulloch could hardly be more different - I've updated the blogpost to reflect what I was actually thinking at the time!
