Today marks the start of a trip around Saxony in Germany, taking in all of its major cities (and railway stations in a few other places too!).
We began with a wait for our first train (to Dresden) at Leipzig’s main railway station (or properly, ‘Leipzig Hauptbanhof’) – this place makes the newly refurbished St Pancras look like the result of an afternoon of very amateur DIY. It has several huge vestibules, waiting rooms and grand staircases, the result of two railway companies coming together at the beginning of the 20th century to build a station together to serve their respective lines. Of course the early 21st century has given it something else – a big 3 story shopping centre right in front of the station’s unbelievable 24, yes 24, platforms! It’s an absolutely breath-taking sight – train spotters rejoice!
