I’ve just watched the first episode of the seriously terrifying new BBC drama, ‘Apparitions‘, starring Martin Shaw as the Catholic Church’s chief exorcist, battling the forces of evil. This is real hide-behind-the-sofa material, and very well written indeed. If you’re of a nervous disposition I wouldn’t recommend watching it however, because there’s quite a lot of gore and violence in evidence, and it has very adult themes so its not suitable for kids.
It shares lots of qualities with one of my favourite horror dramas from the nineties, ‘Ultraviolet‘, from Channel 4, which had a catholic priest leading a band of yuppies on a crusade against modern-day vampires. Even the music and settings of many of the scenes are eerily familiar. This is no coincidence because Apparitions is the new production from the creator of Ultraviolet, Joe Aherne.
It’s available on BBC iPlayer, and episode two is due to be broadcast on Thursday 20 November – you have been warned!
