This is a bit unusual for me, but I’ve eaten out at two Thai restaurants in the last week. Both fantastic but on opposite sides of London so hopefully one of them isn’t too far away from you – they’re both worth a visit if you like spicy asian food.
I’ll start by telling you about my local, the Thailander in Stratford (it’s at 5-7 Leytonstone Road which is about ten minutes walk from the station and about a minute’s walk from the suburban Maryland railway station). Hidden behind a rather grotty bar of the same name, walking inside is like stepping over the oceans into Thailand itself. The tables and chairs are intricately carved in a distinctly asian style, and there’s even a large buddhist shrine at the rear of the restaurant! The menu is huge, and runs to eight or nine pages, so even if you’re a discerning foodie you’re bound to find something to enjoy. They even serve thai beer if you’re looking for the authentic east asian experience. It’s a wonderful place and a great opportunity to pleasantly surprise your friends!
I’d also like to tell you about the Shaftesbury Arms at 121 Kew Road in Richmond. A pub you say? Yes, it’s a traditional old-fashioned inn just a few minutes walk from Richmond station but, in addition to its large range of ales, they serve up thai food. I had a great meal here, only slightly less impressive than the Thailander. And it’s cheap! We had the two course set meal and it was £7.95 each – and this is in the middle of Richmond! Even if the credit crunch really bites I’m sure this place will still be heaving given their prices. They’re even a bit 21st century and have their own website here.
