On The Fringe

October 7, 2008 By Pete Stean

For all of you bemoaning Spooks Code 9 and anticipating the real thing when it returns later in the year, I’ve found an interesting substitute that might tide you over… as long as you don’t mind a bit of the X Files in the mix!

It’s ‘Fringe‘, a new series from JJ Abrams (director of Cloverfield, Mission Impossible III and the upcoming Star Trek 11) which involves two female FBI agents, a mad scientist and his son, and their mysterious controller dealing with events occuring as part of a vast conspiracy mysteriously referred to as the ‘pattern’. The agents are called upon to investigate inexplicable events that take place, as well as fend off various bad guys along the way. I’m rather taken with this new show, as its main characters are well fleshed out and interesting, and there are lots of teasters about them and the developing plot throughout, much like Heroes. I’m also swayed by the fact that the mad scientist, Walter Bishop, is played by none other than John Noble, who I love in Lord of the Rings as Denethor, the steward of Gondor (also a complete nutter!)

It’s very intelligent drama and well written, so I’m sure that the more discerning viewer will enjoy it 😉
