I’m not a vegetarian by any means, but at the same time I don’t demand meat every time I eat out. I’m quite happy to have a meal that has little to no animal protein in it. So, I was pleasantly surprised to be taken to Beatroot earlier this evening.
It’s a small veggie cafe on Berwick Street in Soho, with a few tables inside and some space to sit outside – the layout inside reminds me of primary school – all orange and curvy. If you can’t get a seat then you can always get a take out, as they serve up all the food in boxes of various sizes. There’s a wide selection of dishes available from both a hot and a cold counter. I had a box of chickpea and sweet potato curry, rice and some veggie lasagne (with spinach – exactly the way I like it) topped off by some delicately seasoned beetroot. It’s not sophisticated fare by any means but very wholesome and it soaked up the beers I’d been drinking a little earlier very satisfactorily. They also do various concoctions of fresh juices – the A.B.C looks like a good one – apple, beetroot and carrot They can also serve up wheatgrass shots if that’s your thing (but I’m told they taste like newly mowed grass and are absolutely disgusting so perhaps not!)
Cheap and cheerful and highly recommended – we had the ‘large’ boxes (and they were large, believe me!) for £5.90 a pop. Not bad at all for Soho.
